Sue (right) & Ed Thomas - In spite of many health-related problems, Sue and Ed Thomas are courageous enough and love music Enough to come to play and sing at the Smyth County Jam. They not only perform here, but at several other venues around the area. Ed plays guitar, mandolin and a little claw-hammer banjo. Sue is a strong singer, despite her breathing problems. They like all types of music and have the greatest respect for all others who play. Sue admits that she hated bluegrass music before she and Ed joined up, now it is a very natural thing for her to do. They admire Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard, Doyle Lawson, among many others.
